THE MILE

The coming transformation of the harbour of Amsterdam, will require for the plan, an high density urban condition to fit the 7 million square meters dedicated to the dwellings. The quality of the water is crucial for the new development and the relationship between the existing harbour situation and the new way of living envisioned for the 2050. A linear development is suggested, in order to reclaim space from the water, guarantee visibility of the ij banks and for the creation of a special interaction between people.

“The movement is the social connector” The unexpected mile is an urban structure which represent diversity in a growing city, a chance to develop a community composed by multiple identities and cultures. The mile is based on mobility and circulation of people and goods by land, ramps and water.

The relationship with the water and the weather is crucial to formulate a new tradition able to accommodate and put differences in synergy. The urban structure will be populated by a variety of units placed in a certain method, for increasing different ways of interactions. The unexpected process of developing the typologies is on the hands of the citizen who buys the plot and build their own houses in synergy with each other, due to their preference of interaction, tolerance and collaboration.

The new tradition is focused in the public space, located on the rooftop of the structure: a unique linear park where to enjoy the view, orientate, gather, relax and meet. The roof is the space dedicated to the “super functions”: metropolitan and local institutions or specialized buildings for activities.

The freedom of developing small typologies is the unexpected component which will create a vibrant and diverse environment in one kilo-meter length and circa forty meters section.

Irony and cultural exchange are expected, the cultural social composition related with the residential units is unexpected.
